Church History

The Greater New Point Missionary Baptist Church was organized on January 9. 1977 at Wilbur Avenue, Newark, NJ with the Rev. C Young presiding. The organizer, Rev. W. L Robinson, served as the first pastor.

Worship services were held at the Weequahic Presbyterian Church, Newark, NJ until the Lord led us to our present location. On October 17, 1979 Rev. Willie Adams was called to serve as pastor and remained until July 27, 1980. On September 23, 1979 we had our grand march. Greater New Point was the first Black Missionary Baptist Church in the township of Irvington.

On May 3, 1980, Rev H. Wm. Rutherford was called as pastor, where he served until December 31, 2018.

On July 25, 1993, Greater New Point laid the corner stone and burned all mortgages. It was God’s grace along with the faith of members and friends that made this possible.

Greater New Point has continued to grow and on May 12, 1999, God blessed us to purchase the property located in the rear of the church building, 10 Hoffman Place. On February 20, 2002 we were blessed to purchase the property next to the church at 66 Paine Ave. All this property is now being used for parking.

Greater New Point is active in the community. We serve as the meeting place for the Irvington NAACP. We have served as past headquarters for the NJ State Conference of the NAACP units. Greater New Point is a supporter of the Christian Fellowship Missionary Baptist Association of NJ. Greater is also a supporter of the United Missionary Baptist Convention, the General Baptist State Convention and the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc.

Greater New Point has supplied to pastors: Rev. James Flack, Pastor of the St. John Baptist Church in Jamesburg, NJ and Rev. H. Wm Rutherford, III, Pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist Church of Orange, NJ.

This congregation is made up of many ministries, but the one that brings a glow to Greater New Point is our Youth Ministry. This ministry stresses Christian learning and educational excellence.

After the retirement of Rev. Rutherford, Greater New Point continued to function, by God’s amazing grace, without a pastor for fourteen (14) months.

On February 1, 2020, Greater New Point Missionary Baptist Church of Irvington, NJ ended their search for the next pastor and unanimously voted Rev. Darron Thompson as pastor. Rev. Thompson accepted the call prayerfully to be the next under shepherd of Greater New Point.

Rev. Thompson has revealed a great vision for Greater New Point and we, as the officers and congregation, are excited to begin this new journey.

We have come this far by faith leaning on the Lord. We are confident that He will continue to lead us to higher heights.
